Independence Day, 2010:  As Americans take time to celebrate their national independence, it might be sobering to acknowledge that their lack of sovereignty over the monetary authority makes the notion of independence merely a nominal concept.  Money means sovereignty; money wins elections.

In my tiny but significant political race for state senate, the votes corresponded exactly with the money spent:  Sen. Broadsword spent $23,375 to get 1,692 votes for 49% of the total to win.  Mr. Engelhardt spent $11,582 to get 1,208 votes.  The Stivers campaign spent $5,283 to get 553 votes.  The cost of each vote for Sen. Broadsword was a whopping $13.81, while Engelhardt and Stivers spent $9.58 and $9.55, respectively, for their votes.  In the final analysis, money buys elections because it buys profile, influence, and public perceptions.

My congratulations to the Senator in her victory.  She ran a clean campaign. I am confident that she will be responsive to the concerns of the 553 voters who voted for me.
